Contrary to what you may think, tomatoes do not originate from Italy, but from South America. In fact, it was famous Italian explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus who first brought the fruit (of the genus Solanum) to Europe in the 15th Century, giving his countrymen and women one of the most important ingredients for today’s culinary masterpieces. Although tomatoes come in many different colours – including yellow, white, purple, orange, some even with stripes – most people tend to opt for the classic red fruit. The red colour comes from a phytonutrient called lycopene. Phytonutrients are naturally occurring bioactive substances in fruit and vegetables that have been found to offer many health benefits.
Lycopene is one pigment in a large family of plant pigments known as carotenoids, which are also, as the name suggests, found in carrots. Carotenoids such as lycopene are powerful antioxidants, which protect the body from excessive sun exposure by absorbing UV radiation. The greatest benefit of lycopene, however, is its anticoagulant (anti blood clotting) properties which protect against hardening of the arteries, in turn reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke. Scientists believe that this is one of the reasons why cardiovascular disease is less prevalent in the Mediterranean region, which is noted for its high tomato consumption.
